The Mercedes C140 S-Class Coupe was introduced for the European market in 1992 at the Geneva Motor Show in Geneva and replaced the C126 S-Class Coupe. It was based technically on the 1991 S-Class but had a stylistically independent body. The re-launch of the S-Class, in which Mercedes again wanted to place in front of his rival from Munich, got bigger and more powerful. Technically everything was feasible, up to the 6-liter V12, but with 4 overhead camshafts and 4-valve technology was already very complex. The coupe could show a softer line, it was more elegant than the sedan drawn. Analogous to the other passenger car types new type designations were also introduced with the S-Class coupés in June 1993; the 500 SEC, for instance, thus became the S 500 Coupé. The type label on the deck lid now only documented the displacement and the class to which the car belonged but not the form of the bodywork visible anyway.
