Overview
Toyota revives the legendary Supra name and its brilliant performance to go along with it. Under its shapely hood lies a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that Toyota says makes 335 horsepower, but our testing revealed that number to be fairly conservative. No convertible version has been announced, so the Supra will be offered exclusively as a coupe. If you're looking for a drop-top sports car, consider the new BMW Z4, which is built alongside the Supra in Austria and shares the same underpinnings and powertrain. Despite sharing numerous parts, Toyota was able to give its version a personality all its own, which helped the Supra a spot on our 2020 10Best list.
What's New for 2020?
Mark this as the year that hell froze over—and the year that the 2020 Toyota Supra makes its triumphant return to the Japanese automaker's lineup. After a decade of teasers and concepts, the production Supra made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2019.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
3.0 - $50,945
Supra 3.0 Premium - $54,920
Launch Edition - $56,180
The first 1500 Supras will be sold as Launch Edition models. We'd pony up for the mid-range Premium trim to unlock a host of features, not least of which is a larger 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay capability, a 12-speaker JBL stereo system, a head-up display, and heated leather seats. The Supra is offered in several hot hues; we'd be tempted by Nitro Yellow for an extra $400, but we also like Downshift Blue which adds no extra cost to the bottom line.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Likes: Smooth and powerful inline-six, well-matched automatic transmission, a blast to drive on road or track.
Dislikes: Manual transmission is missing, inconsistent launch-control engagement.
All Supra models come with an eight-speed automatic and are offered only with rear-wheel drive. At our test track, the Supra laid down some seriously impressive acceleration numbers: zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and zero to 100 mph in only 9.5. That puts it in the big leagues against the Chevy Corvette, the Porsche Cayman GTS, and the BMW M2 Competition. In fact, it's even faster than the vaunted fourth-generation Supra that was powered by a twin-turbocharged inline-six that made 320 horsepower.
It's a shame there's no manual transmission option, but hope isn't completely lost; it's rumored that the Supra will gain a stick later in its production run; a lower-priced four-cylinder model is also rumored. Despite its performance potential, the Supra's suspension is forgiving enough to drive daily; its steering is accurate, nicely weighted, and direct, which enhances its fun-to-drive personality.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
Fuel economy ratings for the Supra are good, earning 31 mpg highway, 24 mpg city, and 26 mpg combined. That's more efficient than the Corvette, the Cayman GTS, and the M2.
Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo
Likes: Fine materials, great fit and finish, intuitive infotainment system.
Dislikes: Obstructed view outward, difficult ingress and egress, more BMW than Toyota inside.
The driver-focused cockpit is tight, and although the double-bubble roof provides some additional headroom, the tallest drivers will feel pinched. Cargo space is similarly cramped, but the cargo area (accessed via a hatchback) should be roomy enough for a couple of duffle bags, a week's worth of groceries for two, and maybe even a set of golf clubs depending on the bulkiness of the bag.
Much of the Toyota's interior is shared with the Z4, so those familiar with BMW switchgear and infotainment controls will feel right at home. The standard touchscreen infotainment system features a 6.5-inch display, but a larger 8.8-inch display with navigation and Apple CarPlay capability is available. A 12-speaker JBL audio system is optional on the base Supra and standard on the Premium and Launch Edition models.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Supra has not yet been tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Toyota offers a host of driver-assistance features as standard across the Supra lineup, including automated emergency braking. Additional features, such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, can be added via the Driver Assistance package for $1195. Key safety features include:
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Standard lane-departure warning
Standard automatic high-beam headlamps
