The Renault Arkana is the brand's first coupé SUV and is available as a hybrid from the outset. It will go on sale in September 2021 and price will start from £25,000 (est).

There will initially be two engines to choose from. The first is a 1.3-litre petrol mild hybrid which produces 138bhp and is paired with an automatic gearbox. With small amounts of electrical assistance designed to help supplement the engine when you're cruising along, or to help you get up to speed faster, mild hybrids can help to lower your running costs compared with conventional engines.

For buyers wanting to go green, the Arkana is also available as a regular hybrid, with a 1.6-litre petrol engine being combined with two electric motors. The system produces 138bhp in total, but Renault says this setup has enough electric power to allow you to complete 80% of a typical city journey without using a drop of fuel.

This version also comes with bespoke driving modes designed to either save or use stored energy from the battery, depending on the situation. For example, you might choose to save your electrical energy for use on crowded city streets later on in your journey.

With dimensions that firmly place it as a large SUV, the Arkana features LED headlights and a light bar at the rear that runs the entire width of the car, plus plastic body cladding around its lower edges to give it a bulky, go-anywhere look. Buyers who opt for the sporty RS Line version also get bespoke paintwork and bumpers.

Inside, you'll find more boot space than in the more expensive Mercedes GLC Coupé, at 513 litres, meaning a family's holiday luggage should hold no problems for the Arkana. The car also features rear seats that fold completely flat, liberating even more space when needed.

Entry-level models come with conventional analogue instrument dials with a small digital display between them, while higher-spec versions feature a 10.0in digital instrument cluster, and the infotainment system's touchscreen measures up to 9.3in. Four USB sockets (two in the front, two for rear passengers) means that no one needs to worry about charging their devices, either.

As well as offering a choice of Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes, the Arkana is available with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, a blindspot monitoring system and automatic emergency braking. There's also a 360deg camera system to help with parking, or even a self-parking system that can do the job for you.

With few direct rivals, the Arkana represents a comparative bargain next to more premium coupé SUVs such as the BMW X4, Mercedes GLC Coupé and Audi Q3 Sportback. For reference, our reigning Large SUV of the Year, the Peugeot 5008, is priced from £28,980.
