The W-16 engine era is concluding, but not without a final grand performance from Bugatti’s impressive quad-turbo 8.0-liter machine. Showcased in a customer's Bugatti Mistral, this powerful engine recently helped set a new standard for speed in open-top production vehicles. This incredible car has become the world’s fastest open-top model, reaching an astounding 282 miles per hour at Germany’s Papenburg test track. That top speed translates to about 453.91 kilometers per hour, surpassing previous expectations by a solid 21 miles per hour. Originally, Bugatti estimated the Mistral could achieve 261 miles per hour—a thrilling figure on its own—but the actual results went far beyond.
At the controls of the record-breaking Mistral was Andy Wallace, Bugatti's renowned test driver and a Le Mans champion. Wallace was also behind the wheel of the Chiron Super Sport 300+, setting the closed-car record at 304.77 miles per hour back in 2019. The Mistral, with its stunning Jet Orange details, pays homage to Bugatti's previous record-breaking models like the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport and the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. For fans of Bugatti’s signature black-and-orange color scheme, this Mistral is an impressive addition to the lineup of iconic record-breaking vehicles.
With only 99 Mistrals planned for production, Bugatti is adding a unique chapter to its legacy. The owner of the Mistral, who also holds the other three Bugatti record-breaking models, was present during the record-setting event on November 9, watching as his car claimed its spot in automotive history. Bugatti’s Mistral not only dethrones Hennessey’s Venom GT Spyder, which reached 265.6 miles per hour in 2016, but also signals a memorable send-off for the extraordinary W-16 engine era, with a car that is as striking in design as it is in speed.
