Dodge History - Innovative Company

Among the major brands of Chrysler now belonging to Daimler-Chrysler is Dodge, which was founded by brothers John and Horace. Since they were young the two were mechanics enthusiasts and employed in the workshop of the parents, began to collaborate with Ford providing engines built by them. Then in 1914 they produced the first car, a five-seater torpedo with a 4-cylinder engine. Since then Dodge grew exponentially, so much to be the first American company to test their cars on a private test track. As a very innovative company, Dodge implemented an electric starter instead of the crank and created what is called the first closed car in history, with all steel body. In 1920, both founding brothers and Frederick Haynes, who continued to develop the business, improving models and building technology, became the directing manager. In 1928, Dodge joined the Chrysler Group, while continuing to produce cars under its own brand. Among the first cars made by the new Dodge was in 1938 D 8, very similar Chrysler's Airflow, with a six-cylinder engine. During World War II, Dodge, like all U.S. brands was engaged in war production of various types of vehicles. Dodge trucks remained in Europe after the war and became the main means of transport for people and goods. In the early 50s Dodge went back to car first station wagons. In 1953, at Coronet Dodge presented an engine that would characterize its story in the following years, the so-called RED RAM HEMI V8 with 140 horses. Then also Dodge was forced to follow the fashion for fins like Cadillac and did so with the model Royal. In the second half of the sixties Dodge introduced the Charger, a sports car with various versions and engines, including the powerful V-8 HEMI. Da quel momento la dodge si sviluppò in modo esponenziale, tanto da essere la prima casa americana a collaudare le proprie auto su una personale pista di collaudo. Casa attenta alle innovazioni, la Dodge inserì l'avviamento elettrico al posto di quello a manovella e realizzò quella che viene definita la prima auto chiusa della storia, con carrozzeria tutta in acciaio. Nel 1920 a distanza di pochi mesi scomparvero entrambi i fratelli fondatori e così la direzione passò nelle mani di Frederick Haynes, che continuò a sviluppare l'azienda, migliorando modelli e tecnologia costruttiva. Nel 1928 la Dodge entrò a far parte del gruppo Chrysler, pur continuando a produrre vetture con il suo marchio. Proprio gli autocarri della dodge, rimasti in europa dopo il conflitto, costituirono il principale mezzo di trasporto per persone e cose. Nei primi anni cinquanta la Dodge riprese a costruire autovetture iniziando a produrre anche le prime station wagon. Nel 1953 sulla CORONET la Dodge presentò un motore che avrebbe caratterizzato la sua storia negli anni successivi, il cosiddetto RED RAM HEMI V8 da 140 cavalli. Poi anche la dodge fu costretta a seguire la moda delle auto pinnate come la cadillac e lo fece con il modello Royal. Nella seconda metà degli anni sessanta la dodge presentò la charger, vettura sportiva con varie versioni e motorizzazioni, tra cui il potente V 8 HEMI. La Charger e, in particolare la versione road and track con un propulsore da 440 cavalli, può essere definita una "muscle car" per eccellenza.
