Not all cars are created equal, especially when it’s a car built by Mercedes-AMG. The CLK 55 AMG first became available as a coupé. A short while later, as a convertible, it delighted those who prefer a windswept hairstyle. Equipped with a 5.5-liter eight-cylinder engine, it remained true to its predecessor as the only car in its segment to possess a V8 engine. Its numerous competitors were reduced to the role of imitators. The eight-cylinder in the second-generation CLK 55 AMG received a power pump to create a certain distance from its earlier peak output. Instead of 256 kW (347 HP), the three-valve aspirated engine known as the M 113 evo now delivered 270 kW (367 HP). Accompanied by the typical AMG eight-cylinder sound, it accelerated in a superior manner: the CLK 55 AMG coupé reached 100 km/h after 5.2 seconds, and the convertible needed just two-tenths of a second more. A build sheet and performance like this make the CLK 55 a vehicle that was truly “Dominant in its day!”
