2021 Genesis G80 (overview)
From its unique double headlights and gigantic pentagonal grille to its slippery bodywork and sloping roofline, the all-new 2021 Genesis G80 is a rolling beauty. The shapely sedan is inspired by the company's new GV80 SUV, which also looks the part of a high-class luxury vehicle without the high-end price tag. Both entries are Genesis' attempt to usher in a new era and increase its cache as a burgeoning luxury brand the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The G80 slots in between the smaller G70 and the larger G90 sedans, and it's expected to compete with mid-size luxury cars such as the BMW 5-series and the Mercedes-Benz E-class.
2020 Genesis G80
2019 Genesis G80
2.5T, $48,725.
2.5T Advanced, $53,325.
2.5T Prestige, $57,625.
3.5T, $60,125.
3.5T Prestige, $66,125.
The best value among the various trim levels appears to be the 2.5T Advanced, which adds several high-end features that easily justify the price increase over the standard car. The Advance trim comes standard with 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a power trunk-lid, and a 21-speaker Lexicon stereo system. All G80s come with rear-wheel drive as standard but all-wheel drive is available for an extra fee.
The entry-level G80 will come with a standard turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that makes 300 horsepower. Buyers seeking quicker acceleration will want to opt for the more powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 with 375 horsepower. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The outgoing G80 offered a Sport trim level that had exclusive performance equipment and a more sinister appearance. Otherwise we expect the G80 to provide a relaxed ride, effortless steering, and dutiful brakes.

With its primary focus as a luxury car, the G80 looks to provide a properly upscale interior. Its cabin showcases an elegant design with a streamlined dashboard, soft-touch surfaces, and rich-looking materials. The steering wheel has an odd aesthetic and the rotary shift knob is never as intuitive as automakers think, especially when positioned near other circular-shaped controls, but overall the inside of the G80 looks wonderful. The sedan will offer desirable features such as a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, heated and ventilated front and rear seats, and more. Genesis also said it kept the front roof pillars and rearview mirror as small as possible to promote outward visibility. The new G80 has more headroom and legroom than the outgoing model, too, which was spacious to begin with.
2021 BMW 5 Series (overview)
If quiet luxury and handsome styling are high on your new-car priorities list, the 2021 BMW 5-series sedan could very well be the answer. Its spacious and plush cabin is a pleasant place to spend your commute, and BMW offers a host of powertrain options to suit your needs, be they fuel efficiency or roaring V-8 performance. A facelift for 2021 brings sharper exterior styling that gives the 5-series an even more upscale appearance, and several tech upgrades should keep it in the fight against key rivals such as the Audi A6, the Genesis G80, and the Mercedes-Benz E-class.
2020 BMW 5-series
2019 BMW 5-Series
530i, $55,195.
530e, $58,195.
540i, $60,445.
M550i, $77,795.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Smooth, powerful, and efficient, both the four-cylinder in the 530i and the six-cylinder in the 540i motivate this big sedan with authority. For 2021, the 540i's powertrain gains a little extra boost, care of a 48-volt hybrid system, which we have not yet tested. Each pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts intuitively and quickly, making the most of the available power. The 540i's six-cylinder is silky smooth and potent, and it makes delightful noises. Apart from the top-dog M5, which we review separately, the M550i is the athlete of the lineup, with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 under its hood.

Rich appointments and good design make the cockpit of the 5-series a civilized space. It's a noticeable upgrade compared with the somewhat drab cabin of its predecessor. It's also spacious for rear-seat passengers and features an impressive amount of technology. We've experienced the optional 20-way multi-contour front seats, which adjust in every way imaginable and provide hourslong comfort. The standard seats might not be as indulgent, but you can still adjust them in 16 ways.
