Continuing the 60 year tradition of sport, style and sex appeal Mercedes-Benz have launched the all-new 2013 SL-Class. The completely redeveloped SL is 50mm longer and 57mm wider than its predecessor but its aluminium bodyshell contributes to a 140 kg weight saving. Much paraded features of the new car have been the FrontBass system and the adaptive windscreen wipe/wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL. The V8 SL 500 develops 435bhp and 700Nm and does the 0 to 100km/h dash in 4.6 seconds while the V6 SL 350 develops 306bhp and 370 Nm and reaches a ton in 5.9 seconds; the latter is quite the econo-mover boasting a fuel economy of 6.8l/100km.
Both BlueDIRECT engines come with a ECO start/stop function and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission. The 6th generation SL has a magnesium frame vario-roof that can be retracted in less than 20 seconds and 3 variations of the roof are being offered: painted, with glass roof or with the unique panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The HANDS-FREE ACCESS provides contactless operation of the boot lid. Simply move your foot in the vicinity of the rear bumper and the bootlid opens or closes automatically, the first of its kind on any car. Specifications and pricing for the SL-Class are yet to be confirmed but it will go on sale in the UK in July 2012. Seems like the Middle East will have to wait a little longer.
