Als Volkswagen 1985 die zweite Generation des Kleinwagen Polo mit dem VW Polo G 40 um eine sportive Version ergänzte, ahnte wahrscheinlich niemand, welchen Erfolgsweg der sehr unauffällig gezeichnete Kompakte vor sich hatte. Heute, nach 29 Jahren, ist er unter dem Kürzel „GTI" längst zur sportlichen Automobil-Ikone geworden und die kurz vor der Einführung stehende vierte Generation ist alles andere als ein graues Entlein.
