Tata HBx mini SUV to rival Maruti S Presso – Spied as lockdown eased
The Tata HBX is the pre-production model of the company’s upcoming sub-4 metre micro SUV. The concept car made is public debut at the Auto Expo 2020 and is based on the H2X concept that was showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. While Tata Motors hasn’t announced the name of the production car, however, the carmaker has confirmed that the HBX is 90 per cent close to the actual production car, which will arrive in the latter half of the Financial Year 2020-21.
The Tata HBX will be the smallest SUV from the home-grown automaker and will be based on the ALFA (Agile, Light, Flexible, Advanced) architecture, which currently underpins the Tata Altroz. The Tata HBX will be the second vehicle from the company to be built on the new platform and employs the Impact Design 2.0 design philosophy.
Visually, the Tata Micro SUV will come with the split headlamp setup, with the primary lights positioned below and the LED daytime running lights (DRLs) placed above it, closer to the front grille. The micro SUV concept also came with floating style roof with roof rack, and at the rear, the SUV comes with small taillamps with Tri-Arrow design LED guide lights, a sculpted tailgate and a faux skid plate. Tata has also said that the HBX will offer best-in-class connectivity features integrated with the highly capable infotainment system.

The Tata HBX SUV will be positioned below the Tata Nexon and powertrain wise we expected the HBX to come with the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine the powers the Altorz. The engine currently makes about 85 bhp and develops 113 Nm of peak torque, while mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. We expect the SUV to get an AMT version later.
Upon its launch, the Tata HBX will compete with the likes if the Mahindra KUV100, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and even the S-Presso.
