Tata has resurrected the Safari brand by revealing the new-generation model today. The new Tata Safari is essentially Harrier's three-row version and was showcased at Auto Expo 2020 as Gravitas. The upcoming SUV was first revealed as a concept at Geneva Motor Show 2019 where it was codenamed H7X. The company later changed the name to Buzzard but the pre-production model at the Greater Noida Auto Show was christened Gravitas. However, the carmaker revealed earlier this month that the Gravitas' production model will mark Safari's resurrection in the Indian market. Tata had discontinued Safari Storme in April 2020 when the BS6 emission norms came into effect.
The all-new Tata Safari, unlike the predecessor, ditches the ladder-on-frame chassis for a monocoque frame and is underpinned by the company's OMEGARC platform. The SUV employs Tata's Impact 2.0 design tenet, which is why it looks quite similar to the Harrier. But to set itself apart from its five-seater sibling, the new Safari gets a chrome grille with tri-arrow inserts, stepped roof, sculpted tailgate, and redesigned tail lights with different LED signature.
2021 Tata Safari is expected to feature iRA connectivity suite which is currently available with Nexon and Altroz iTurbo. The customers will have a choice between two-seating options -- a seven-seater model and a six-seater model with captain seats for the middle row. The SUV will be available with Harrier's 2.0-litre diesel engine that puts out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine will be available with a choice between a six-speed manual gearbox and six-speed automatic transmission.
